New Website Offers More
On May 1, 2000, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission
launched a redesigned website. The Talking Book Program took this
opportunity to update its web pages and add new features to the
website at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/tbp.
The website is accessible to adaptive software for reading the Internet.
The new features include:
Magazines. The National Library Services for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped (NLS) provides free subscriptions to about
80 national magazines. Our new website contains a list of these
magazines available in braille or audio format, plus the three Texas
magazines and the three Spanish magazines.
Spotlight on Texas. This Internet version of TBP's quarterly
audio newsletter provides annotated listings of the Texas books
most recently recorded by our volunteers. Each Spotlight issue also
includes a list of books recorded by our volunteers that fall within
a featured category, such as mysteries, romances, or westerns.
Volunteer Recording Studio. Information is provided on the
work of our dedicated volunteers.
Disability Information and Referral Center. This page provides
links to other state agencies and organizations serving Texans with
disabilities.
The website includes English- and Spanish-language versions of
the Loan Policy, Getting Started with the Talking Book Program,
the general information brochure, and previous news bulletins. The
site has a link to the NLS site and its online catalog of books,
as well as online publications of interest to teachers and librarians.
We hope you will visit the Talking Book Program website from time
to time. We will continue to improve and expand it in the coming
months.
ADA turns 10 on July 26
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Americans
with Disabilities Act, the American Association of People with Disabilities
and Volkswagen of America are sponsoring a nationwide Torch Relay.
The relay will kick off in Houston on June 11. Austin will be the
second stop on June 13 at the Capitol. The relay will then leave
Texas and continue around the Country, ending up in Washington,
DC, for the July 26 celebration. The Spirit of ADA Torch Relay:
Renew The Pledge seeks to call attention to the accomplishments
of people with disabilities while emphasizing that much remains
to be done to make our workplaces, society, and institutions more
accessible. For more information on the celebration, please visit
the website at www.spiritofada.org.
Making our Service Work Better for You
The staff o f the Texas Talking Book Program always wants our service
to be better for you and for all our patrons. But we can't do it
alone. Here are a few tips that will make the service better for
you and everyone:
Order by E-Mail
Don't forget that you can order books and ask questions by e-mail.
Our e-mail address is tbp.services@tsl.state.tx.us
"X" Marks the Spot on Broken Books
Although we inspect ever book that goes out, occasionally you may
receive an audio, large print, or braille book that has a problem.
To let us know the book is broken, mark a large "X" on the left
side of the return label. Please do not put a string or rubber band
around the strap or put notes in book containers. Just make a large
"X" on the label to flag the book for our staff to review. If you
would like another copy of the book, request one by phone, e-mail,
or mail.
Match Cassettes to Mailing Containers
Our staff has found a growing number of mailing containers with
missing or incorrect cassettes in them. When this happens, two books
become unusable. Please be considerate of your fellow patrons by
making sure all the tapes end up in the matching mailing container
before you send them back. Thank you.
Talking Book Topics Error
The March-April 2000 edition of Talking Book Topics has an error
in the order form. The numeral "1" was incorrectly added to the
end of the order numbers for three titles. Please use the numbers
as listed below:
44793 - Furthering my Education: A Memoir, by William Corbett.
45506 - Merry Heart: Reflections on Reading, Writing, and
the World of Books, by Robertson Davies.
45509 - Colleen Dewhurst: Her Autobiography, by Colleen Dewhurst.
