Texas State Publications
2001 Annual Index
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The Texas State Publications 2001 Annual Index compiles the entries
found in the 2001 monthly issues of Texas State Publications. Texas
State Publications is a checklist of documents received by the Texas
State Library and Archives Commission from state agencies, councils of
government and institutions of higher education. The monthly checklist
includes monographs, monographic series, annual and biennial serials,
and new periodical titles; excluded from the checklist are items exempted
from the depository program (job announcements, news releases, etc.) and
individual issues of periodicals. The monthly checklist announces ephemeral
materials at the end of each publishing entity's section under the heading
"Leaflets." The annual index omits exempt items as well as the leaflets
listed in the monthly issues.
ARRANGEMENT
The index has two divisions: the first division lists publications by
issuing agency, arranged alphabetically by the key word in the agency's
name. Entries for agencies and councils and government are placed before
entries for institutions of higher education. Entries in the agency listing
provide the following information when available: issuing agency and its
address; Texas document classification number; title; author; edition;
publication date; pagination; frequency; series titles and number; title
and contents notes; microfiche availability symbol; OCLC record number;
depository availability symbol; and entry number.
The second division of the annual index is a subject list. The subject
list uses the Library of Congress subject headings found on each entry's
OCLC record. In addition, the following terms have been included in appropriate
entries to facilitate identification of types of documents: annual reports,
biennial reports, budgets, college catalogs, consultant contract reports,
financial reports, legislative appropriations requests, periodicals (i.e.
serials published more frequently than once per year), and strategic plans.
The subject list is arranged alphabetically by subject term, and within
identical terms alphabetically by title. The alphabetical arrangement
disregards punctuation and files "nothing before something." For example,
the following terms will appear in this order:
WATER CONSERVATION PROJECTS. TEXAS. JEFFERSON COUNTY
WATER CONSERVATION. TEXAS
WATER CONSERVATION. TEXAS. COLORADO RIVER WATERSHED
WATER LEVELS. MEASUREMENT. EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
WATER. PERIODICALS
WATER. POLLUTION. LAW AND LEGISLATION. TEXAS
WATER. POLLUTION POTENTIAL. TEXAS
WATER. POLLUTION. TEXAS. AUSTIN
WATER QUALITY BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
WATER QUALITY. CANADIAN RIVER WATERSHED
WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT
WATER UTILITIES
WATER-SUPPLY, AGRICULTURAL
WATER-SUPPLY ENGINEERING. TEXAS. EL PASO COUNTY
WATER-SUPPLY. MEASUREMENT. EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
WATERSHED MANAGEMENT. TEXAS. HANDBOOKS, MANUALS, ETC.
The major exception to the above example is in the filing of subject
terms that begin with the word "Texas"; in this case no rearrangement
of terms has been made.
The subject list is intended to be used in conjunction with the agency
list. Each subject list entry includes the title or uniform title of the
document, classification number and entry number. After the entry number
of a specific document has been determined from the subject list, please
search the agency list for the entry number to obtain more complete bibliographic
information about the document.
DISTRIBUTION & AVAILABILITY
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission sends copies of the publications
it receives to depository libraries
whenever possible. The depository availability symbols, (D) or (N), indicate
if the document was distributed. The symbol (D) indicates that the document
is available at depository libraries throughout the state; the symbol
(N) indicates that the document was not distributed to depository libraries
but is available on loan from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission
through inter-library services. Please contact your local library's inter-library
loan department about borrowing documents from the Texas State Library.
Requests for permanent copies of documents must be directed to the
issuing agency. Each entry in the agency list includes the agency's
phone number and address for public information requests. Inclusion of
a title in the index does not guarantee that an agency has copies available
for general distribution.
In most cases, non-depository (N) documents are available in microfiche
format from the State and Local Records Management Division of the Texas
State Library for a cost of one dollar per fiche. The microfiche availability
symbol consists of an Arabic numeral followed by the initials 'MF'; the
Arabic numeral indicates the number of microfiche required to contain
the document. The symbol (0MF) indicates that no microfiche was produced
for the entry. For more information about ordering documents in microfiche
format, please contact the Texas State Publications Depository Program,
Texas State Library and Archives Commission, P.O. Box 12927, Austin, Texas,
78711, 512/463-5434.
