Selected 2002 Texas Reading Club Events in Texas Libraries


Arlington
Arlington Public Library

The library sponsors a kick off event on Jun. 1, 2002, at all branches. A variety of activities and programs are planned for all age groups throughout the summer, including Texas history programs, musicians, animals, storytellers, and theater productions. The library will also sponsor a special Read Across Texas Day at the Fielder House Museum, Jul. 13, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Austin
Austin Public Library

The library obtained a grant to provide one special program a week at each of the 21 branches of the Austin Public Library. Pajama parties, storytimes for toddlers, preschoolers and mixed-ages, as well as bilingual and Spanish programs, are planned throughout June and July. Azle
Azle Public Library

Azle Public Library will begin its Texas Reading Club on Jun. 6. The library is planning several Texas-themed programs, including live native Texas animals, a Texas game day and a visit from the new Cowgirl Hall of Fame Museum in Fort Worth. The library also sponsors an annual snowball fight during the summer.

Buffalo
Buffalo Public Library

Participants will be invited to write a poem or draw a picture about Texas which will decorate the library. After the summer program concludes, the library hopes to publish a book with them. Teen volunteers will help coordinate many of the programs this summer, and a wrap-up party and award ceremony will be held Jul. 30.

Bulverde
Bulverde Public Library

Participants will receive a free T-shirt. Additional prizes will be awarded based on the number of books read by each child. A kick off program on Jun. 5 includes ventriloquist Joe Libby and his pal Sagebrush. Other programs include Native American storytimes, Texas animals, a theater production and a campfire sing-a-long. A local dance studio will teach participants how to do a Texas line dance, and everyone will celebrate at the watermelon party at the park on Jul. 24.

Carrollton
Carrollton Public Library

The library will host a Summer Camp on Jun. 12 for ages 7-12. Participants will learn camp songs, crafts and relay games and listen to spooky stories told around an edible campfire. The library sponsors a Chapter-a-Week program each Monday at 3:00 p.m. June - August.

Cedar Park
Cedar Park Public Library

Infants through adults are invited to participate in a variety of storytimes, puppet shows, a Mad Science program, magic shows, and storyteller programs this summer.

Clifton
Nellie Pederson Civic Library

Puppet Wise Productions will perform a puppet show and teach participants how to make puppets on Jun. 17. Other events will include storytimes, children-produced puppet shows and readers' theater.

Dallas

The library sponsors an art program titled Go-Van-Gogh, an acting workshop, Poetry in Motion, movie days, storytellers, Seussology, music programs, a Russian program, magic shows, jugglers and a program with live birds. The End-of-Summer Reading Program Party will be at the Dallas Zoo on Aug. 10.

Denton
Denton Public Library System

Each child that completes one reading log can select a free book, thanks to the Friends of the Denton Public Library. A special program called "Travel Across Texas" invites children to read a variety of different books with a Reading Map. Kids can "drop in" on the destinations that interest them, and for each destination visited through books, participants will receive a prize coupon. All participants who complete at least one reading log will be invited to the Library's Sizzling Summer Pool Party on Aug. 17, at the Civic Center Pool.

El Paso
El Paso Public Library

More than 48 special performers will be visiting the main library and branches in El Paso this summer as part of the Texas Reading Club. All children from infants through 8th grade are invited to read at least eight books during the summer to receive a certificate. The Japanese Women's Association of El Paso will teach origami workshops at a number of El Paso libraries.

Gatesville
Gatesville Public Library

Author Evelyn Horan will be at the kick off event on May 29, with her book Jeannie, a Texas Frontier Girl. The library will host a Scholastic Book Fair and a Cowboy Magic Show.

Georgetown
Georgetown Public Library

The kick off event will be May 29, 2002, in Chatauqua Park, where performer Joe McDermott will sing cowboy songs and children can get pony rides. Volunteers have converted the outside of the children's library into a barn. Texas storytimes and entertainment is scheduled each week from Jun. 5 - Jul. 19. The Georgetown Library Foundation sponsors a family event in the Palace Theater on Jul. 17. Kim Lehman will entertain with stories and songs, and the Random Acts Puppet Theater will perform "The Wisdom Merchant."

Groesbeck

Reading Club programs will include storytellers and crafts. Special Texana programs include the origin of the "Yellow Rose of Texas," the fish of the Texas Gulf, and Texas Tall Tales. The library's kick off event is Jun. 12, 2002.

Houston

In addition to reading programs to be hosted at the library, a special program called Books and Tennis for Life will be available throughout the summer. The program includes tennis equipment and training to 300 financially-disadvantaged youth. The library will have books, magazines, videos and computers available to participants so they can learn about tennis, health, nutrition and the importance of setting goals in life.

Irving
Irving Public Library

The library begins the Texas Reading Club on Jun. 5. A celebration of reading and families takes place Aug. 3, at the Northlake Community College campus. READA-PALOOZA will include face painting, book characters, balloons, train rides, petting zoos, free refreshments and karaoke.

The kick off event will be May 29. The library hosts programs this summer from area cowboys, singers and an archeologist.

Longview
Longview Public Library

The program kicks off on Jun. 5 with a puppet program, "Reading Wrangler's." Other programs include improv comedy acts, a visit by the animals of the Caldwell Zoo, and Mr. and Mrs. Berenstain from the Berenstain Bears.

Mount Calm
Mount Calm Public Library

For every five books read, participants can select a prize from the library's "goodie box." The library's kick off is Jun. 3.

Richardson
Richardson Public Library

Through Aug. 3, toddlers, children and adults can participate in one of three clubs: Read-Aloud Club, Reading Club, or Adult Reading Club. Reading logs will track the number of books read, and readers will help create a coyote mural in the library. In addition, based on the total number of books read, the library and Friends of the library will donate children's books to local community centers. The library hosts a kick off party Jun. 1, 2002, featuring Willy Welch, the artist who wrote and performed the official 2002 Reading Club song, "Reading Across Texas."

Round Rock
Round Rock Public Library

Round Rock has a reading program for everyone, infants through adults. Participants who read 25 books or complete five hours of reading will earn coupons, incentives, and chances for prize drawings. Special storytimes for all ages, as well as animal programs, musicians, Pecos Bill, and puppet programs, are scheduled throughout June and July. The library is planning a Summer Reading Party on Aug. 10, with Joe McDermott performing.

Schertz

The reading club participants keep track of the number of minutes spent reading library books. Completed reading logs can be traded in for great prizes. Storytimes, a dinosaur program and presentations by the Institute of Texan Cultures on cowboy and Native American life. On Jun. 12, everyone is invited to visit with players from the San Antonio Missions baseball team and their mascot, the Ballapeņo.

Taylor
Taylor Public Library

The library sponsors a kick off event on Jun. 3, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. Summer programs include Mad Scientist, magicians, storytellers, School House Safari, puppet shows, a zoo show and a cooking program. Programs will be held on Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings. Reading incentives and prizes will be awarded.

Temple
Temple Public Library

As part of the Texas Reading Club, the library will have summer storytimes and crafts each Wednesday. Local police, fire and EMT personnel will present a program titled Community Helpers. Several storytellers and a live animal program are also planned. A grand-finale party will take place Jul. 20.

Texarkana
Texarkana Public Library

The library will host Terrific Tuesdays and Wacky Wednesdays throughout June and July. Special programs include Jungle Jim's Bugs of the World, Craft day, Snakes of the Ark-La-Tex, Come Alive with Music, Etiquette for Teens, Mysteries and Clues, Suminagashi paper marbling and storytimes and book discussions.
