Potter to McArdle, November 1874

Fort Wood, N.Y.H. Novr 24th 1874

H.A. McArdle Esq. Independence, Texas

My Dear Sir,

I mailed to you on the 19th a communication for one of the
newspapers of Texas. Two slight amendments have occurred to me,
which may be inserted, if the paper be still in yr possession by ma-
king two passages in the middle & one of the later paragraphs
read thus.

—"The star of Indepence appears as the flag of Mexican Liberty
is about to go down forever on the last spot where it ever waved."

—"for the heroes of the Alamo will some day have a fitting monument,
if not on their forgotten grave, at least on their new Thermopylae;
and a native artist will arise to rear it."

I have found the cart[e] de visite which I referred to in my last,
and will send it. I would include it now, if I had it with me.

If you should see Mr. George Seward or any of the Seward family
please give them the sad information that my daughter, now in
Brooklyn, is probably in a fatal decline. I have only the faintest
hope of her recovery.

I am Sir most truly yours

Reuben M. Potter
