Train to Share: Interoperability Training for Cultural
Heritage Institutions
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission working with the
University of North Texas Libraries, Amigos Library Services, and
other partners, has received a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian
Grant to develop Train to Share, a training program administered
as part of Texas Heritage Online.
This program was designed specifically for Texas librarians, archivists,
and cultural heritage professionals. The three-year project will
address the need, identified nationally, but equally evident at
the local level, to create sharable metadata and develop state-wide
workshops, adapted from the Library of Congress’s “The
Digital Library Environment” series, which provides an overview
of interoperability measures for digitization projects and principles
of sharable metadata.
Selected cultural heritage institutions will collaborate to provide
better access to rare and unique materials, and, in the process,
forge new and sustainable partnerships vital to the ongoing development
of digital projects across the state.
Claudia Rivers, Head of Special Collections at the University
of Texas at El Paso, reviews a rare pamphlet from the
Mexican Revolution that she plans to digitize and describe
for the Train to Share project. The University has partnered
with the El Paso Historical Society and the El Paso Public
Library’s Border Heritage Center to complete the
Train to Share project.

Training Opportunities
Texans can benefit from the Train to Share project by participating
in its affordable training series. As part of this IMLS-funded initiative,
five short courses will be offered in: developing a digital project,
evaluating library systems, creating metadata records, choosing
content standards, using authority files, and advanced topics.
This five-workshop series will be taught by Bill Walker of Amigos
Library Services and modeled off the Library of Congress’s
series, “The Digital Library Environment.” Courses are
two-day long workshops lasting from 9-4 each day and are available
at different locations across the state.
Train to Share participants, Raquel Estrada, Acquisitions Librarian,
Millie Hernandez, Event & Exhibit Coordinator, and John Hawthorne,
Assistant Director of Special Collections at the University of Texas
Brownsville's Oliveira Memorial Library, take a workshop on Metadata
at the University of Texas at El Paso.
