Western Council of State Libraries Library Practitioner Certification
The Western Council of State
Libraries is made up of twenty-two state libraries west of the
Mississippi River. Members of Western Council: Alaska, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri,
Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon,
South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In May 2006,
Western Council approved the following requirements for a Library
Practitioner Certification.
The certification requirements are:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2000 hours of library work, unpaid or paid, within five years
of application
- 242 CEUs in
specific competencies
- Renewals are required every three years and require additional
45 CEUs
The certification competencies are based on an earlier set of competencies
"Library Practitioner Core Competencies", developed by
State Library continuing education coordinators. After adopting
the Core Competencies, Western Council developed a competency-based
Certification Program.
