Members of Western Council: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In May 2006, Western Council approved the following requirements for a Library Practitioner Certification.

The certification requirements are:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2000 hours of library work, unpaid or paid, within five years of application
  • 242 CEUs in specific competencies
  • Renewals are required every three years and require additional 45 CEUs

The certification competencies are based on an earlier set of competencies "Library Practitioner Core Competencies", developed by State Library continuing education coordinators. After adopting the Core Competencies, Western Council developed a competency-based Certification Program.
