Introduction

The 1998 edition of the Texas Reading Club Manuals Cumulative Index is based on a previous index compiled by the 1995 Indexing Class (LIS 384K.9) of the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Library and Information Science taught by Linda Webster. The original indexers were: Julie Crouch, Marah deMeule, Mary Ann Meyers, Patricia Threatt, Slava Savchyn, Leah Starr, Larissa Titova and Carolyn Winkler. Linda Webster is the principle indexer and the editor of the 1998 edition. She was assisted by Alana Cash.

The 1998 Index is divided into two sections: 1) the Crafts and Activities Index and 2) the Craft Materials Index. The Craft Materials Index provides access to crafts by the major material needed to make specific craft projects, such as paper plates or aluminum foil. Materials common to most of the crafts, such as construction paper, are not included.

The Craft and Activities Index provides access to craft projects, games, patterns, puppet plays, writing activities, songs, poems, fingerplays and other activities. Specific animals and storybook characters can also be located, as well as more general themes featured in past Reading Clubs.

Some of the topics not indexed because they appear in each manual are:

• *Publicity and promotional materials (found at the beginning of each manual)
• *Sample letters
• *Sample Public Service Announcements
• *Sample newspaper press releases

Other Considerations:

Clip art is located at the end of each manual and includes button patterns, certificates, and reading logs. These pages are not numbered in the manuals. References to these pages in the index are designated as "Appendix."

Bibliographies and filmographies are found at the back of each manual. Many topics within the chapters of each manual also include short lists of books and films. These lists are indicated under themes and activities of interest in the index.

There are some pagination problems in some of the manuals. In addition, pages with patterns and clip art are usually not numbered. The pattern pages are numbered for the index, even when there is no corresponding number on the page in the manual.

The locators for each item include an abbreviation of the title of the manual and the page number(s). There are the codes for the Reading Club Manuals:
