| Introduction |
The “custom holdings”
feature on OCLC allows libraries to program the computer to
randomly select their lender string from pre-determined libraries.
Library symbols are arranged in “custom holdings groups”
and the groups are arranged in “paths”. The paths
tell the computer to select from the first group in the path,
and if necessary to go to the second group, then the third
group and so on. This saves time by greatly reducing the need
to check lending policies. If set up carefully, it can also
facilitate a more even distribution of lending among libraries.

Custom Holdings
Groups |
A custom holdings
group can contain an infinite number of libraries. The libraries
in any given group should have the same geographic relationship
to the borrowing library. For example, one group may contain
the symbols of the libraries lying within the same metropolitan
area. Another group might consist of libraries within a 200-mile
radius. Libraries that loan genealogy materials at no charge,
or libraries that charge for genealogy loans may another type
of group to create.

Custom Holdings
Paths |
A different holdings path can
be set up for each type of request. For
Paths example, a path can be created for loans patrons are
not willing to pay for. Another one for patrons willing to
pay for loans would include the free loan groups followed
by groups of libraries that charge for loans. Paths
can also be created for free copies, charged copies, genealogy
loans, genealogy copies, and audio-visual loans.
Any number of custom holdings groups can be placed in a custom
holdings path.
