Bill Clements

The Clements with Roger Staubach

Governor and Mrs. Clements with football legend Roger Staubach, March 31, 1988. Staubach was one of the finest quarterbacks in football history. Hailed during his college career as the greatest quarterback that Navy ever had, he won the Heisman Trophy in his junior year. After serving in the Navy for four years, with one year spent in Vietnam, he joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969.

On any given Sunday in the 1970s, Staubach would find himself the most popular man in Texas. Known for his last-minute heroics, he and coach Tom Landry became a legendary team, guiding Dallas to four NFC titles and two Super Bowl wins. It was during this time that the Cowboys were nicknamed "America's Team." Staubach was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, his first year of eligibility. He ranks with Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana as the best to ever play the game.

By the time of this photo, Staubach had become successful in commercial real estate in Dallas.
