Bill McNutt to Clements, November 7, 1980In 1980 the Republican Party named Ronald Reagan and George Bush as its nominees for President and Vice President of the United States. Governor Clements was chosen to direct the campaign in Texas. Clements named Lee William McNutt III of Corsicana as the Navarro County Chairman for the Reagan-Bush Campaign. McNutt had received his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University, where he had been active in campus politics, and his master's degree from Vanderbilt University, before returning to Corsicana to become a management trainee in the family business, the widely known Collin Street Bakery, renowned for its DeLuxe Fruitcakes. Immediately after the 1980 election young McNutt wrote to give high praise to Governor Clements as the one man responsible for a rebirth of the Republican Party in Texas. Note again the underlined C at the bottom of the page with instructions to George Bayoud to draft a response. No copy of that response was included in the Clements Papers.
