Fraud Reporting
The General Appropriations Act for Fiscal Years
2010-2011 included a requirement (Article IX, Sec. 17.05) that state
agencies shall use appropriated funds to assist with the detection
and reporting of fraud involving state funds, including funds received
pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Agencies
are required to provide information on the home page of the agency's
website on how to report suspected fraud waste and abuse involving
state resources directly to the State Auditor's Office (SAO). This
must include, at a minimum, the State Auditor's fraud hotline information
and a link to the State Auditor's website for fraud reporting; and
include in the agency's policies information on how to report suspected
fraud involving state funds to the state auditor.
Anyone may anonymously report suspected fraud or illegal activities
involving state resources if there are facts (not just mere suspicion)
that point to fraud or unlawful conduct. You may contact the Texas
State Auditor's Office Hotline (SAO) by calling (800) TX-AUDIT
(892-8348) or by visiting the Texas
State Auditor's Office Hotline.
SAO investigates alleged misuse of state resources and illegal
acts involving:
- expenditures by state agencies, colleges or universities
- the use of state grant money
- funds received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act (or federal stimulus funds) and
- funds for Hurricane Ike victims.
The policies of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission
encourage the reporting of suspected fraud involving state funds
to the State Auditor, using the above methods.
